She cradled the teddy bear to her, sitting on the park bench, singing a lullaby under the moonlight. It was a tattered old thing. Something little Elanore had found on the side of the road, abandoned. Just like her. She called him Jack. He had a red ribbon tied around his neck, and Elanore talked to him as if she were talking to a friend, except for now. She sang. A lullaby she'd made up on her own.
Her voice carried on the wind, singing in the moon's silver that danced through the clouds and down to the Earth. She was cold, hungry, and desperately needed a bath. Her mid-back length brown hair was tangled, and her blue-grey eyes were lifeless. Her dress, which barely brushed the tops of her scabbed knees, was dirty, torn, and it had an awful stench. Elanore let a single tear fall onto her new found best friends as she continued her lullaby in a soft voice. So soft, it was almost like an angel child were singing, instead of the five year-old.
Wind blew, rustling the trees. Elanore looked up from Jack to see if anyone was approaching. She was terrified of anyone and anything. Her parents had left her, and now, she didn't know where to go. Why had they left her? She were a mere child, and yet, they did not want her. "I'm not sure what to do, Jack. We're alone. But, at least we're together." She said to her teddy bear. Her voice was so high. So young. She smiled for a brief second before a something in the distance caught her attention. Waves of blonde hair poured before her dull eyes, and she frowned, terror striking her gut.
Wordlessly, she climbed from her spot atop the bench and crawled underneath, pulling her knees to her undeveloped chest, and hugging Jack close. He was all she had now. All she trusted. After all, he was an inanimate object, and he couldn't harm her. Unless he was taken from her. She'd found a friend in the toy, as most children do. But, unlike those children, this toy was something Elanore would never forget. Just like her abandonment was something she would never forget.
She was a naive child. She knew almost nothing of the world in which she lived. Nothing at all. Just the basics. And fear. All the cold-blooded fear. Another tear slipped from her eyes, and she sniffled, but soon realized that was a mistake. This stranger in the distance was bound to hear her. "What do we do, Jack?" She asked her bear, hugging him harder to her. She was frightened, to say the least. But, she was also desperate.

Ava couldn't sleep. Though, really what else was new? She had been suffering a particularly stubborn bout of insomnia probably due to worrying over her Freshman's state testing next week. Not only would this have a lot of hold on the kids' futures but also her own. As it would show how well she had been able to teach them, and if she were doing well enough to keep her job. She lie in her bed, tossing and turning for hours before she finally determined she wouldn't be sleeping tonight. She got to her feet and slipped on her house slippers before padding down the hallway. She remained light on her feet so as not to wake up her foster children and went into the kitchen. She brewed herself some coffee and poked her head into the living room. Her best friend was asleep on the couch after having crashed there the night before (at least someone in this house could sleep!). She quickly scribbled a note to the girl and left it on the counter before heading upstairs. After finishing off her coffee she threw on a pair of yoga pants, her sneakers, and a white tank. She leaned over and pulled her curly, blonde hair up into a ponytail and grabbed her watch and phone. After she got outside she warmed up and decided to jog down to the nearby park and then she'd head home.
The moon overhead was beginning to wane and she started off at a brisk jog. One thing she'd tried her hardest to do once she got a desk job was to continue to exercise. By the time she made it to the park she had worked her way up to a good jog. She took the long way around the park and took her time to enjoy the beauty of the place. When it wasn't crowded with tons of people it was like really being alone in nature. Ava gave a small yawn and decided she'd just walk a for a bit trying to catch her breath. After a while she came to the main sitting area of the park where she heard something unusual. If she had had her headphones on she wouldn't have even noticed considering how quiet the noise was. But years of being a foster mother had attuned her to the sound of a child sniffling in tears, and that is precisely what she heard. Her head whipped around and she tried to locate the source of the noise. Her mouth formed a perfect o as she saw a small girl huddled underneath a bench.
Cautious as she dared she walked over to the bench. Ava crouched down to where she'd be on the same level at the little girl and gave her a gentle smile. She was mentally freaking out about the state of the small girl. Her hair was tangled and snared, her clothes were dirty, and she looked like she hadn't bathed in quite some time. And she looked very, very scared as she clutched a worn out teddy bear.
"My that's a handsome bear you have there. My name is Miss Ava, what's your name?" Her voice was quite and gentle.

Her dull eyes stared at the woman in fear. She cradled her bear to her in desperation. When the woman spoke, she gave her name. This surprised Elanore. For a moment, the child simply stared at her, then whimpered. "My name is Elanore. This is Jack." She said, turning her bear so that he now faced this stranger. "My mommy and daddy didn't want me, so they abandoned me." Elanore said then. The way she said it made it seem as if it were normal for a child to be dumped on the side of the road by their parents.
She looked at Ava again, and cradled Jack tighter. She'd seen many people killed by strangers. On television, and in reality. She wasn't sure if trust was even possible, or even what it meant. She was only a child after all. "Will you help us? I don't like being alone. It's scary!" She said, seemingly terrified and desperate now as she reached out to grab the woman's wrist. A tear slid down her dirty cheek, making it look as if a mere line on her face were lighter than the rest of her pale complexion.
